We’re all guilty of it. It haunts even the very best of us. In fact, 40% of people will experience financial loss as a direct result of it. If you’re a college student….there’s up to 95% chance you’re victim to its effects…RIGHT…NOW.
Procrastination is almost impossible to avoid. In a world where everything is at our fingertips, it’s amazingly easy to put everything off until the last minute.
So, what do you do when you’re a habitual procrastinator? That is, you put everything off until the last minute. Whether it’s your projects, presentations, speeches, or big papers, they all seem to end up getting crammed into an ON FIRE 12 hour period of blind panic, the day before they’re due.
The answer is simple.
Learn to break the cycle.
While most people just assume that procrastinators are lazy, or simply bad with time management – the truth is it’s not their fault. While some people are motivated by reward (like getting an A, or a big bonus, or rock hard abs), procrastinators are motivated by things like stress and deadlines. That’s why it’s so hard to get anything done until the very last minute. Up until that point, there’s not enough motivation.
So here are 4 easy ways to obliterate your procrastination habits even if you’re a “lost cause”.
- Blast distractions:
When you want to get work done, the best thing you can do for yourself is find a place where you won’t be distracted. It’s far better to find a private study room in a public library than to get lost in the rabbit hole of trying to clean up your entire room and relocate your TV, computer, etc.
Download an app like “Cold Turkey” to lock out your cellphone screen for an hour at a time so you aren’t splitting your attention and time.
Only work on your project or study during the time you set aside for this.
- Create a “Success Zone”:
Do you goof off when you’re alone in your room? Say by…watching Netflix, or playing games on your phone? Ever notice that you can’t seem to stop doing those things when you’re there?
The mind learns that each room has a specific purpose. Whenever you’re in that room, you’re VERY likely to start feeling a PULL to do…whatever you usually do in that room.
So hack your environment and use this to your advantage. When you want to work, ALWAYS work in the same spot and train your brain to associate that desk or room with getting sh!t done! Each time you do this, the work will start getting easier and easier…until one day, it just pours out of you without any effort.
- Trick your brain:
So now that you know you’re motivated by deadlines and stress, you can start using this to get your work done on time! Set up bets with a friend you trust. If you don’t get 10 pages written by Friday, he gets $200. Or you get a firm slap to the face. Or WHATEVER you need to light that fire. The higher the stakes, the more likely you’ll be to actually do the work.
